Koh Samui is the second largest island in Thailand and a
highly popular travel destination for tourists.
Located in the Gulf of Thailand, just off the eastern coast of the
mainland, Koh Samui has a reputation for being home to
some of the most sought after resorts in South East Asia and is accompanied by
pristine palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, mountainous rainforests,
extravagant resorts, and world-class spa treatment facilities. Needless to say,
there is much to be excited about when visiting this amazing island, but before
you can do that, how can you travel to Koh Samui?
Here is a brief guide concerning the best way to get to Koh Samui and the different means of transportation that are available:
Traveling to Koh Samui by plane
Traveling to Koh Samui on a plane is probably the most common choice of transportation for tourists, especially during the low season when prices are low. In fact, this is the most popular way to get to Koh Samui regardless of the price which is largely due to the luxurious resorts on the island and the reluctance of wealthy travelers to jump on board a bus, train or local ferry.
That being said, traveling to Koh Samui in the air is certainly the fastest and most comfortable way to reach the island. On arrival, you will disembark at Koh Samui airport, which is privately-owned and interestingly, mostly outdoors. From here is just a short distance to the main resorts on the island which are easily reached by a local taxi.
Traveling to Koh Samui by boat
Many travelers choose to travel by boat simply to enjoy the journey itself, and this is certainly the case when it comes to traveling to Koh Samui on the ferry. There are also several options with each of them priced differently, and while the standard ferry is the most popular, if you have more time you can even opt for a yacht or traditional sailing boat. Tickets for the ferry and the bus to get you there are easily organized from any travel agent in Bangkok while there is a boat agency located on the island, called Samui Boat Charter. Here, you can also travel the entire island by boat, which is an ideal way to take in the tranquil and peaceful essence of the island.
Traveling to Koh Samui by Bus
Traveling to Koh Samui by bus is slightly misleading as you cannot drive all the way to the island itself. Yes, from Bangkok you will travel by bus to the south of Surat Thani and get on board a ferry at Donsak Pier which takes you to Koh Samui. Again, you can travel on a regular coach to this port or choose the VIP option, but regardless it is worth keeping in mind that this means of transport will take an awful lot longer than a plane.
It must also be noted that this journey is usually taken on a
coach rather than a local bus and the standard of comfort has improved in
immensely in recent years. In this sense, you can expect the bus to Koh Samui
to stop frequently for rest breaks on which you can grab something to eat or
just stretch your legs. Furthermore, another benefit of taking the bus to Koh
Samui is the wide selection of times available and the many options which allow
you to connect with buses to other destinations such as Phuket and the
beautiful island of Krabi.
